Charlotte Writers' Club - Our 90th Anniversary

Selected Members Reading and charity book drive in January, at our new location

To launch its 90th anniversary year, the Charlotte Writers’ Club will once again showcase the writing of its members with a Selected Members Reading at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 17, 2012. The event and reception will be held at our new meeting space, the Queens University Conference Center on Tyvola Road just west of Park Road. Reading time is limited to five minutes per reader. Prose is limited to two pages of up to 700 words, poetry to two poems of no more than two pages. Entries must be submitted without identifying information. A cover sheet must be submitted with title(s) of the work(s), contact information (including telephone and email address), and brief bio. Entries must be received by December 13, 2011. Click here for submission guidelines.

The Selected Members Reading will be held at our new location, the Queens University Conference Center on Tyvola Road just west of Park Road. This location offers much more space, a kitchen for refreshments, and ample, well-lit parking; it is made available to us rent free, courtesy of the Queens University Library and Department of English, who have agreed to co-sponsor our events. Thanks to Dr. Carol Jordan for helping arrange that. This new space will allow us to expand beyond the confines of our current space and to provide more welcoming opportunities with refreshments. It will also save the Club funding for use in other areas.

Also for our January 2012 meeting, we are sponsoring another event: a Charity Book Drive. We are asking all those who attend that evening to bring a new book to the event. These will be collected and distributed to appropriate groups in the Charlotte area who have need of them. That includes school, nursing homes, prisons, and other entities whose budgets unfortunately do not allow them to purchase many new books. This will be the first of what we hope will be more outreach into the community around us in support of reading and literacy.
